Tolpuddle Old Chapel

Repair of the 1818 former chapel used by the Tolpuddle Martyrs, and its conversion into a community building as a quiet place for contemplation.

The original chapel earth walls have been repaired with cob blocks and earth mortar sourced from the site.  Blocked windows and doors are reopened and the roof repaired.  Removal of the later hayloft floor reinstates the single volume chapel.  A discreet extension provides supporting facilities.

Trowbridge Museum

Redevelopment of the existing museum within the Grade II listed Slater’s Mill to incorporate an additional floor for exhibits and new lift shaft. Construction of the 1990’s Shires shopping centre had concealed the historic mill structure. This project has repaired and re-exposed the structure and simplified internal layouts to provide visual clarity and a sense of the original mill. Externally a new independant lift extension provides full accessibility to all floors. This Town Council led project has support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Friends of Trowbridge Museum and several other organisations.

Lyme Regis Museum

Redevelopment and extension of the Lyme Regis Museum included new gallery spaces, education room, visitor toilets, improved circulation, a shop, increased storage for collections and additional office space.

The intention was to reinforce the inward looking character of the original museum building, and create a new extension that opened out to sea. A second phase is planned to reinstate the missing three storey east wing.

Rural Life Museum

The redevelopment of the rural life museum in Glastonbury includes galleries inserted into the existing farm buildings without changing the sense of the place, and new circulation and learning spaces integrated into the pattern of old buildings.

The architecture was carefully co-ordinated with the exhibition design.  Internal reorganisation was key.  The main entrance through the farmhouse was re-established.  The old courtyard was opened up and visitor access and flow improved to all levels in the building.

Secret World, Education Building

Conversion of the existing Goat House building to provide a new education facility, and the construction of a new link and extension to house additional service facilities.

Castle House

Castle House is part of Taunton Castle.  Its medieval curtain wall, Tudor south block and Stuart east wing survived intact to the present day, but were in a fragile condition, and had to be stabilized.

The building is now converted into a study centre on the ground floor, with holiday let accommodation above.  The repairs and new insertions were kept to the minimum necessary to express the original building and make it useful again.

Torre Abbey

Building repairs and redevelopment of Museum and Art Gallery for Torbay Council.

The whole site and Grade 1 listed building has been reorganised to enhance access, and incorporate major museum and gallery accommodation and gardens.  Works include a new cloister walk, masonry and render repairs, areas of roof renewal and conservation of monastic ruins.

The project had Heritage Lottery and Historic England funding and has been carried out in four phases, with a fifth anticipated.

Education Centre

The repair of a late 18c water mill and 19c barn at Hestercombe Gardens, and their conversion into an education centre.  Old equipment has been refitted in the mill, together with an exhibition of early energy production.  The barn has become a multi function education space.

The intention was to demonstrate how old buildings can be converted sensitively, and incorporate low energy modifications.  The roofs, walls and floors have been super insulated, and the complex is heated with a log batch burning boiler.

Tyntesfield Education Building

The project converts an 1880’s sawmill, steam engine house and battery room into an education centre for the Tyntesfield Estate.  It provides two learning spaces, an open air workshop, kitchen and toilets for practical courses and school visits.

The masonry shell has been repaired to retain the industrial sense of the place for the learning spaces.  New services are contained in an extension, hidden in the quarry, with a thin timber tail that is woven back through the old building.

Tewkesbury Tourist Information & Exhibition Centre

Repair, conversion and extension of a Tudor and C17th Grade II* listed timber frame building into a Tourist Information and Exhibition Centre, acting as a hub for other attractions in the town.

The scheme kept as much of the original fabric as possible, to which were added new elements.  The existing building houses the main functions, and a small extension at the rear has unlocked the complex circulation requirements, gaining disabled access throughout.
