Garden Room

Charlton House dates from 1726, and it’s repair and reordering was completed in 2010.

An independent garden room and store building have been carefully integrated into the complex of existing dovecot, outbuildings and yards behind the house.

A five bay garage, constructed from galvanized steel and black timber cladding, is concealed in the neighbouring wood.

Rural Life Museum

The redevelopment of the rural life museum in Glastonbury includes galleries inserted into the existing farm buildings without changing the sense of the place, and new circulation and learning spaces integrated into the pattern of old buildings.

The architecture was carefully co-ordinated with the exhibition design.  Internal reorganisation was key.  The main entrance through the farmhouse was re-established.  The old courtyard was opened up and visitor access and flow improved to all levels in the building.

Sherborne Castle Estate

This is the first phase of a five stage development at the Sherborne Estate. This phase deals with the conversion of the East Stable block for office use and the refurbishment of the stables to be opened as an extended part of the visitor experience to the Castle.

Bristol Zoo Entrance & Shop

Bristol Zoo’s entrance reception had become cluttered and confused with the shop.

The resolution was to clarify the central pavilion as reception only with a new wing inserted discreetly to one side into a pocket of unused land.

The new steel framed pavilion responds in form, size and scale to the original classical 1830s lodges.  In the longterm it can become a completely separate reception and shop building.

Gorilla House

Bristol Zoo’s gorilla family is growing so their den space has been doubled.  This has been converted from the 1872 giraffe house, and is equipped with timber climbing frames, an adaptable network of ropes and a splash pool.

Visitors are allowed to walk through the space in a new steel and glass hide, over which the gorillas can walk, making them predominant.  A new extension for the keepers overlooks the gorilla island.

The Shambles

The Market House, in the heart of Castle Cary, was built in 1855.  The town council wanted to open up the ground floor to increase public use without compromising the building. This involved considerable consultation with the public, the local authority and Historic England.

The final scheme has been to enclose the rear Shambles with a new glass roof to create a public meeting space which kept the feel of the old market.

Castle House

Castle House is part of Taunton Castle.  Its medieval curtain wall, Tudor south block and Stuart east wing survived intact to the present day, but were in a fragile condition, and had to be stabilized.

The building is now converted into a study centre on the ground floor, with holiday let accommodation above.  The repairs and new insertions were kept to the minimum necessary to express the original building and make it useful again.

Dinnington Manor Barn

A l906 listed barn, converted to open living areas and entrance court, with ground floor bedrooms.

All new partitions are differentiated by contrasting materials and colours to maintain the quality of the original spaces and surfaces.

Torre Abbey

Building repairs and redevelopment of Museum and Art Gallery for Torbay Council.

The whole site and Grade 1 listed building has been reorganised to enhance access, and incorporate major museum and gallery accommodation and gardens.  Works include a new cloister walk, masonry and render repairs, areas of roof renewal and conservation of monastic ruins.

The project had Heritage Lottery and Historic England funding and has been carried out in four phases, with a fifth anticipated.

Tyntesfield Visitor Facilty

The original 1883 estate model farm has been converted into a visitor facility for the Tyntesfield estate.

The main part of the complex was a large covered yard for the cattle, with an imposing geometrical roof structure.  This now holds the restaurant and entrance space in a way that retains the qualities and textures of the original farm building.  The visitor reception is a straw bale structure that has been hidden within an old barn.
